Perth Airport bore witness to a significant event today as South African Airways (SAA) resumed its direct service between Johannesburg and Perth, marking the return of the esteemed airline to the Western Australian skies following a four-year hiatus. The arrival of the A340-300 aircraft at Perth Airport shortly after 12:30 pm heralded a notable milestone in the ongoing efforts to revive aviation in the region.
The reinstatement of this esteemed route has garnered widespread enthusiasm from various sectors. Addressing the occasion, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism, Rita Saffioti, conveyed her enthusiasm regarding the reinstated service. She underscored its significance in facilitating direct connections for the substantial South African community residing in Western Australia, emphasizing the positive impact on the state’s tourism sector.
Minister Saffioti remarked, “This inaugural non-stop service operated by South African Airways represents a significant milestone in our state’s aviation recovery, providing direct connections for the substantial South African community residing in Western Australia.”
The reinstatement of the Johannesburg-Perth route carries particular significance for major events and sports aficionados. With the Rugby Championship match scheduled for August at Optus Stadium, the resumption of the direct connection is greeted with enthusiasm by Springbok fans and travelers alike.
Jason Waters, CEO of Perth Airport, highlighted the enduring partnership between Perth Airport and South African Airways, spanning over 67 years. He expressed satisfaction at the airline’s return and stressed the strategic importance of the route for South African expatriates and travelers exploring Perth’s dynamic offerings.
Professor John Lamola, CEO of South African Airways, echoed the prevailing sentiment of excitement, underlining the route’s relaunch as a pivotal step in the airline’s recovery journey. He emphasized Perth’s strategic significance as the second intercontinental route to be relaunched after São Paulo, emphasizing its integral role in the airline’s expansion strategy.
“We are delighted to return to the captivating shores of Perth, particularly following the inaugural South African Airways’ direct flight between Johannesburg and Perth – a significant milestone in our recovery journey since resuming operations about three years ago,” said Professor Lamola.
The Johannesburg-Perth route not only strengthens the bonds between South Africa and Australia but also positions South African Airways as offering the most direct route across the Southern Hemisphere, facilitating economic growth and cultural exchange between continents.
South African Airways operates the PER-JNB service on an A340-300 aircraft, providing passengers with 253 seats, including 38 Business Class seats and 215 Economy Class seats.
