By Qantas Airways proudly announces the triumphant return of its veteran Airbus A380, VH-OQA, fondly known as “Nancy Bird Walton,” to the realm of commercial aviation after a prolonged 17-month hiatus in storage. This monumental event not only signifies the revival of an aviation icon but also marks a historic milestone as VH-OQA reclaims its title as the oldest A380 still in operation.
With a storied history dating back 16.2 years, the aircraft embarked on its latest journey following meticulous maintenance procedures in California, before being stationed in Abu Dhabi. Its grand return unfolded at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) on April 6, 2024, following a seamless 13-hour transcontinental flight originating from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH).
Upon its graceful touchdown, the venerable A380 wasted no time in resuming its duties, promptly taking flight on its inaugural long-haul voyage, QF 11, destined for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) from SYD Airport.
Named in honor of the trailblazing Australian aviator, “Nancy Bird Walton,” this iconic aircraft has not only etched its name in Qantas’ illustrious history but has also overcome adversity. On November 4, 2010, during flight QF 32 from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) to SYD Airport via Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), VH-OQA encountered a harrowing safety incident when one of its four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines exploded shortly after takeoff, triggering a major onboard fire. Despite the gravity of the situation, the aircraft executed a flawless emergency landing in Singapore, ensuring the safety and well-being of all 469 passengers and crew members onboard.
With a fleet of 10 A380s under its wing, Qantas is strategically reintegrating these majestic aircraft into its operational framework. As part of its ambitious plan to revitalize its A380 fleet, the airline aims to have all remaining aircraft back in service by the culmination of 2024, with six A380s currently active on Qantas routes.
