Garuda Starts Jakarta-Doha Flights

Hamad International Airport (DOH) has announced the launch of daily flights from Jakarta to Doha, facilitated by Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia’s flag carrier, in partnership with Qatar Airways. This strategic move aims to bolster connectivity between Southeast Asia and the Middle East, reinforcing Hamad International Airport’s position as a key global aviation hub.

Beginning operations on April 4, 2024, the daily flights from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Hamad International Airport (DOH) will be operated by a Boeing B777-300 aircraft with a seating capacity of 393 passengers. This collaboration with Garuda Indonesia complements Hamad International Airport’s extensive Southeast Asian network, which already includes three daily flights to Jakarta, three daily flights to Bali, and three weekly flights to Medan, operated by Qatar Airways. The increased flight frequency signifies a notable enhancement in connectivity between Qatar and Indonesia.

Sujata Suri, Senior Vice President of Finance & Procurement at Hamad International Airport, stated, “The collaboration with Garuda Indonesia represents a significant step forward in Hamad International Airport’s strategic expansion into Southeast Asia. By welcoming Garuda Indonesia to Doha, we not only strengthen our position as a premier global aviation hub but also foster deeper ties with the Southeast Asian travel industry. This partnership underscores our commitment to forging mutually beneficial alliances that spur economic growth, improve connectivity, and establish us as the preferred gateway between Southeast Asia and the Middle East.”

Similarly, Irfan Setiaputra, President & CEO of Garuda Indonesia, expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We are pleased to include Doha in our extensive global network. With strong business, tourism, and cultural ties between Indonesia and Qatar, we believe this new service will further stimulate activities between the two countries while facilitating easier travel for passengers from Qatar to Indonesia, one of the world’s fastest-growing economic centers. This new route signifies a significant milestone for Garuda Indonesia as the national flag carrier, providing passengers departing from Jakarta, Indonesia’s primary hub, with a convenient gateway to the Gulf’s largest city and financial hub. This direct flight between Jakarta and Doha is also expected to attract Qatari tourists to explore other premier tourist destinations from Jakarta, the primary gateway to Indonesia’s exotic locales.”

With Garuda Indonesia becoming the third Southeast Asian carrier to operate at Hamad International Airport, alongside Malaysia Airlines and Philippine Airlines, connectivity between the region and Qatar is poised to expand further.

The introduction of this new flight is anticipated to boost travel demand and strengthen trade relations between Qatar and Indonesia. As Indonesia continues on its rapid economic growth trajectory, set to become the world’s sixth-largest economy by 2027, this partnership will play a crucial role in facilitating business and tourism exchanges.

Since its establishment in 2014, Hamad International Airport has consistently demonstrated an innovative approach to air service development, facilitating the establishment of numerous airline routes to and from the airport.
