By A WestJet Encore de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GJWE, was performing flight WS-3136 from Fort McMurray, Alberta to Calgary, Alberta, carrying 76 passengers on April 13, 2024. The flight landed on Calgary’s runway 35R and proceeded to taxi to the apron without any immediate issues.
However, as of June 3, 2024, the aircraft remains grounded in Calgary, nearly two months after the incident. On the same date, the Canadian Transportation Safety Board (TSB) released a report indicating that the tail of the aircraft had made contact with the runway surface during landing, triggering a “TOUCHED RUNWAY” annunciation for the crew.
Despite the smooth disembarkation of passengers, a subsequent maintenance inspection revealed substantial damage to the lower tail section of the aircraft. The TSB has since initiated a Class 4 investigation to determine the cause and contributing factors of the tail strike.
