In a recent incident involving a JAL Japan Airlines Boeing 787-8, registration JA843J, flying as flight JL-774 from Melbourne, VI (Australia), to Tokyo Narita (Japan), severe turbulence led to injuries for four flight attendants. The aircraft, carrying 146 passengers and 11 crew members, was on its descent towards Tokyo when the turbulence occurred at an altitude of about FL170. Despite the challenging conditions, the aircraft landed safely on Narita’s runway 16L approximately 35 minutes after the incident.
Following the event, Japan’s Ministry of Transport provided details on the injuries sustained by the flight attendants, with one individual experiencing a fracture of the lower right thigh, and three others receiving sprains. The Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) promptly initiated an investigation into the occurrence.
Subsequently, on April 4, 2024, the JTSB released additional information, noting that the aircraft had encountered instability while descending through 5200 meters, approximately 150 kilometers southeast of Narita Airport. This resulted in one flight attendant sustaining serious injuries, while three others received minor injuries. The JTSB has since launched a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to determine the underlying causes and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
